reported break-ins at new schools

ROSEVILLE — Roseville police and Roseville Community Schools officials are on the lookout after several break-ins were recently reported at the new John R. Kment and Joseph G. Steenland elementary schools currently under construction.

At a school board meeting Nov. 17, school officials said security systems have been installed at the schools in an effort to prevent more thefts.

RCS Superintendent John Kment said tools and copper are the items being taken. He said police have checked out scrap yards in Detroit and Oakland and Macomb counties “to see if anyone is bringing any scraps in to sell.”

“It may not be one person,” Kment said. “(The police) are taking this very seriously.”

Jon Steenland, director of buildings and grounds, said a member of the administration would be notified via the new security system should an incident occur. Someone will meet the police at the school to show them around the building and determine if “anything looks out of place.”

The Joseph G. Steenland Elementary School is located at the corner of Barkman and Chestnut, and the John R. Kment Elementary School is under construction behind the recently demolished Eastland Elementary on Washington.

The Police Department reportedly has stepped up patrols around the schools. The new schools are going up as part of a $110 million bond issue.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Roseville Police Department at (586) 775-2100 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 773-2587.
